The eye is a powerful sense, but the eyebrows are even more so. They are surprisingly powerful, too!
Protect your eyes with eyebrows
Your eyebrows protect your eyes from dirt, dust, and rain and act as a filter. Your eyebrows and your eyelids protect your eyes.
Your eyebrows are essential for eye protection. These hairy wonders can do so much more.
Look in the mirror, and see what your appearance would be without eyebrows. Go ahead. We'll wait.
Are you sure your friends and family would recognize you if you didn't have eyebrows? According to research published in the Journal of Vision in June 2013, there is a good chance that they won't recognize you without your eyebrows.
The eyebrows aid facial recognition
In other words, missing eyebrows can affect our brain's ability to recognize faces.
Researchers at California State University Fullerton expanded on previous research that showed how important the eye area was for facial recognition. They studied the relative roles of eyes, eyebrows and eye regions in face detection. Participants were asked to determine if two pictures of the same face, one after another, were identical or different. The number of people who identified the two photos as the same person fell significantly when the eyebrows were removed digitally from one of the faces.
Eyebrows are important for non-verbal communication and enhance facial expressions
How many times have you been able just by looking in someone's eyes to determine what they were thinking?
Your eyes and eyebrows speak volumes. Our daily communication is largely based on non-verbal cues such as facial expressions and body posture (body language). Your eyebrows can indicate when you are amused, curious or skeptical.
These subtle cues, as well as the more obvious ones, can make a huge difference in how people perceive you and how they relate to you.
